Padel and English in London Unites Teens

A group of Bushey Meads School students tried their hand at padel last week at Bushey Grove Leisure Centre with Spanish coach Jacobo Arenaza. Arenaza is temporarily in London, along with a group of 25 participants for a short summer stay organised by Top Talk English Travel. According to their Bushey Meads sports teacher, Ashley Cartledge, the teens loved the sport and can’t wait to play again. Perhaps this is the kind of initiative padel needs to increase its popularity in Britain to levels seen in Spain.

Bushey Meads School supported the project from its onset, since it was a fantastic opportunity for their students to progress in their Spanish studies. It was equally popular with Spanish parents, who were keen on their children practicing English along with their favourite sport – padel. The Spanish participants attend classes daily, both in Spanish and in English, accompanied by a “buddy” from the school. There they help with Spanish conversation and also participate in English classes. After a meal at the school, they go to the leisure centre.

The host families are essential; practising English with the students and even showing students around the city of London on weekends. ‘The kids are delighted with the warm welcome they’ve received at Bushey Meads School and from the host families,’ explains Jacobo Arenaza. ‘I am so pleased to be a part of this project, which really promotes this sport and from an early age so that it can be enjoyed by all’.

Pop-Up Padel lands in Canary Wharf this summer

Pop-Up Padel Canary Wharf 2017

Public Event: 19th June – 5th July, Montgomery Square, Canary Wharf

Brought to you by British Padel – the sport’s acting governing body in the UK – is Pop-Up Padel 2017, an unprecedented world-class event showcasing the fastest growing sport in the world – Padel tennis.

For the first time in the UK, the concept of Pop-Up Padel is introduced through our partnership with Canary Wharf Group, Adidas, Estrella Damm and Aspall. For three weeks this summer Montgomery Square will host the most state-of-the-art Padel court to deliver a high-end experience to anyone wanting to try the sport of padel. Walk-on players will have a chance to play with colleagues and watch London’s first World Padel Tour Exhibition featuring the world’s top players. The Exhibition will take place on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th from 5pm to 9pm.

Padel is the fastest growing sport in the world. It is a racquet sport that originated in Latin America and has attracted over 10 million players worldwide. In Spain alone, where the sport is more popular than tennis, it has attracted over 6 million players. In recent years, the sport has seen high levels of growth in European countries including the UK, Sweden and France.

The sport is a hybrid of tennis and squash, played on a court half the size of a traditional tennis court with surrounding glass walls and using slightly modified equipment. It is a highly sociable sport and does not require high levels of skill when playing at beginner or intermediate levels.

Team GB secure a top 8 finish at World Padel Championships

Team Great Britain beat 8 countries and claimed 8th position at the XIII WORLD PADEL CHAMPIONSHIPS, which took place last week in Cascais, Portugal.

The World Padel Championships is the largest international event for padel. Every two years the world’s top padel players compete against each other representing their countries.

This year Team GB finished ahead of countries including Portugal, France, Mexico and Sweden, where the sport is much more established and widespread than in the UK. This is a huge achievement for the team and an encouragement to keep growing the sport.

Making it the top 8 for the first time since 1992 has not only marked a turning point in the history of the sport in this country, it also means the British team will receive automatic entry to play the next World Padel Championships in Paraguay, 2018.

British Padel is proud to have the support of Lead Partner Air Europa and Official Partners David Lloyd Leisure, Babolat and Adidas in this exciting moment for the sport.

World Padel Championships 2016: Team GB through to finals

Last weekend at the qualifying round of the World Padel Championships 2016 in Vilnius, Lithuania, the British team produced a fantastic result for padel in the UK. Team GB managed to beat all 3 countries – The Netherlands, Finland and Lithuania – and classify for the world finals. The event will take place in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, from the 14th to the 20th November.

On social media, Head Coach Mauri Andrini described the result as a ‘huge achievement’ and was very happy with the team’s performance. For the first time the team was formed by three under 18 players – Sam Jones, Christian Murphy and Connor Silkman – who did not let the team down and performed to a very high standard.

British Padel is honoured to have the support of Lead Partner Air Europa and Official Partners Babolat UK and David Lloyd Leisure in this journey. We look forward to more action in November.
